Ok, so you got yourself a brand new kitten and you’re wondering what stuff you need to buy for your new little friend, or more specifically, what kind of furniture he’ll need. Don’t fret none. Aside from food, water and a clean litter box, your kitten won’t require much in the way of furniture. But a few purchases now will save you a ton of headache in the future.
Scratching Post
First off it’s best now to get your kitten used to taking out all his scratching needs on a scratching post. The simple one post carpet covered scratching posts will do. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy as long as it is tall enough so that your cat can give himself a good stretch with it. A good post will save your furniture from being clawed into a million little shards of splinters.
Cat Bed
Your new kitten will probably also need himself a cat bed. I’d get one big enough for a full grown cat. If you get a small one just big enough to hold is tiny little kitten body, he will outgrow it in a matter of months. Get one that is warm and snuggly. I like the enclosed types. I want my new kitten to feel warm and safe. An oasis away from all the hustle and bustle of family life where he can go and get away from the hectic times of your family life. Keep it off in a corner to ensure he has all the privacy he’ll need.
Litter box
Of course this should go without saying but your kitten will definitely need his own litter box. If you have more than one cat remember that some cats are more territorial than others, so you want to make sure an older larger cat isn’t keeping your new kitten from using his litter box. Your kitten will feel more secure and comfortable with his own litter box until the older cat gets used to him.
Cat carrier
A new kitten means trips to the vet. Some people prefer holding their cat in their arms when it comes to vet time, but that’s a bad idea. You never know what kind of animals might be at the vets office. You might find yourself face to face with a larger than average it pit bull who lunges at you causing you to drop your kitten right into the mouth of said pit bull. DON’T TAKE CHANCES! Get your kitten a pet carrier. He will be a lot safer in the long run. If you can’t afford one, then a simple card board box with ventilation holes cut into it will do just fine. Either way, DO NOT CARRY YOUR KITTEN in to the vets office. It’s dangerous and just not a good idea.
